Nocturne comes from the studio Flatout Games – the team that has already shown with Cascadia, Calico, and Verdant how to conjure up an addictive tile-laying game from simple rules. Designer David Iezzi takes us here into a mystical night world where we, as wizards, try to divide the forest area below us.

Bidding Instead of Laying: A Clever Twist

Unlike most tile-laying games, Nocturne revolves around a bidding system. Instead of simply drawing and placing tiles, you bid with your tokens for the most coveted forest tiles in the display. Whoever bids the most for a tile gets it – but must also manage wisely, as your own tokens are limited and must last the entire game.

You place the tiles you win onto your own forest board, always paying attention to adjacent symbols and landscape types in order to form the largest possible contiguous areas and symbol combinations. This interplay of careful bidding and skillful placement is what sets Nocturne apart from classic tile-laying games and gives the game its own tactical character.

Two rounds, a clever upgrade system

Nocturne is played over two major rounds. At the end of each round, you get the opportunity to exchange your simple bidding tiles for more valuable "Midnight Tokens" – special tokens that give you significantly more bidding power in the second round. This upgrade creates an exciting strategic break in the middle of the game: those who trade wisely can secure the decisive tiles for themselves in the second round, while those who cling too much to their own stock will fall behind.

At the end of both rounds, your forest boards are scored according to various criteria – contiguous areas, collected symbol sets, and other bonus conditions are factored into the final score. This makes Nocturne a game where both the bidding mechanism and the subsequent tile-laying puzzle equally decide victory and defeat.

The Fox Magician: Optional Difficulty Level

For experienced gamers seeking more challenge, Nocturne offers an optional "Fox Mage" mode. This adds additional rules and restrictions that make bidding and placement even more demanding. Those who have already played the base game a few times will find a welcome opportunity here to gradually increase complexity without having to learn a completely new game.

Background: From Cascadia to Nocturne

Nocturne comes from the US American studio Flatout Games, led by designer David Iezzi, which has made a name for itself in recent years with titles like Cascadia, Calico, and Verdant as a specialist in accessible yet tactically clever tile-laying games. Nocturne has received the LUCI Award and continues the studio's tradition of expanding well-known tile-laying principles with a fresh mechanism – here, the bidding system – instead of simply releasing another pure tile-laying game.

My conclusion

Nocturne achieves something that not many tile-laying games manage: It feels familiar because the basic principle of area collecting is known, and at the same time fresh because the bidding system introduces a completely new tactical level. Especially weighing up when to use my limited tokens and when to save them for later provides pleasantly tricky decisions without overloading the game.

The upgrade to the "Midnight Dead" between the two rounds is a small but effective trick that prevents the game from feeling the same throughout its full duration. And with the optional Fox Mage mode for more experienced rounds, Nocturne remains exciting even after several games.

Anyone who liked Cascadia or Calico and fancies a new mechanism in the familiar tile-laying guise should definitely check out Nocturne.
