Blütenreich by Kosmos is a light and fast card game for 2 to 5 players aged 10 and up, which can be played in about 20 minutes. It was developed by Danish designer Michael Løvind Andersen. After the impact of Inventors of the South Tigris, Blütenreich was a welcome, relaxed change for me – a game where you populate your garden with beautiful butterflies instead of fighting your way through dice tables.

Flowers or butterflies: The double-sided card idea

In Blütenreich we settle butterflies in our own garden. The game works via a deck of cards, whose cards are cleverly printed on both sides: on one side you see flowers, on the other side butterflies. For each card, you decide yourself whether to lay it out as a flower or - if you have already collected enough flowers - to bring it directly into play as a butterfly.

Important to know: The flowers once laid out are not consumed. They remain permanently in your display, allowing you to gradually play out ever better butterflies that bring more points and sometimes trigger special actions. This simple but elegant principle – collecting resources that never disappear – makes the game enormously accessible without seeming completely trivial.

Objective cards and the right timing

The goal is clear: Whoever collects 15 points first by laying out butterflies wins the game. In each turn, you essentially have two actions available: take a card from the open display into your hand, or play a card – either as a flower or as a butterfly.

Additional tactical spice is added to the game by the objective cards, which award bonus points for specific butterfly combinations. What's interesting is that you don't automatically get these bonus points as soon as you meet the conditions, but must carry out the redemption of the objective card as your own separate action. This requires good timing – if you miss the right moment, someone else might get there first and claim the coveted objective card for themselves.

The game is very easy to learn overall, but brings a surprisingly fine spice through the different butterfly effects. You constantly have to weigh: Do I collect more flowers now to secure better butterflies later, or do I prefer to play out immediately to secure points before someone gets ahead of me?

Background: A Danish design talent at a traditional German publisher

Michael Løvind Andersen is a Danish game designer whose name originally features a small stroke through the ‘ø’ – a Nordic spelling that is usually simplified to “Andersen” in German. Blütenreich was published by Kosmos Verlag, one of the most traditional German game publishers with decades of history in the family game segment, known for Catan and numerous other classics, among others.

The nature theme with butterflies and flowers fits into a broader trend that has been observed in the board game market in recent years: more and more games consciously focus on relaxed, nature-connected themes instead of conflict or conquest. This development specifically appeals to a target group that longs for calmer, visually appealing gaming experiences without completely sacrificing tactical substance.

Who is Blütenreich worth it for?

Blütenreich is an excellent introductory game for families looking for a pretty, relaxed card game without much potential for conflict. It also works well as a nightcap at the end of a game night with more experienced groups, because its short playtime of around 20 minutes can easily fit in even after a long evening. For avid gamers looking for deep strategic substance, however, it will remain a nice pastime rather than a real highlight.

My conclusion

Blütenreich is a lighter, more relaxed version of games like Mischwald, with a pretty nature theme and a fast, fluid gameplay that knows practically no downtime. It's a great choice for families and casual gamers that isn't too complex, but is still genuinely fun and can't be played completely thoughtlessly.

What I particularly like is the short playing time of only around 20 minutes, which makes Blütenreich the perfect nightcap or a way to lighten the mood between two larger, heavier games – especially in combination with more complex titles like Inventors of the South Tigris, it's a welcome breather for the grey cells. However, for frequent players who are constantly looking for tactical depth, it will probably remain too easy in the long run.
