Reviews

Spectacular from the Norwegian publisher Chilifox Games is a great family game plus for one to six players aged 10 and up, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Anyone who knew "Fütterprinz" (Feed the Kraken) last year will find themselves at a similar complexity level here – perhaps even a tad more demanding. We are building an animal park here, but in a completely different way than in well-known zoo-building games: The focus here is on a clever dice-and-tile puzzle rather than pure tableau building.

Wertung

7 /10

Spieleranzahl: 1–6.

## Dice and tiles in interplay

Each player has their own personal display of dice – two of each color – and hex tiles showing different animal species, including a zebra as a possible starting point. In addition, there is a general display where dice and tiles are also located. Whenever it is your turn, you choose one of your own pieces – either a die or a tile – and additionally one from the display in front of you. Then, this display is passed on to the next person. This means: you never get exactly what you would have chosen beforehand, but have to work with what your fellow players leave you.

In addition to the animal species, the hex tiles also show dice values that you must match to activate the tile at all – the mere presence of an animal is not enough, you also need the right die with the right number on it.

## Building towers and interim scoring

If you have put together three hex tiles of the same color and connected specific semicircular symbols on the corners, you may build a tower. This tower then allows you to also place six-sided dice, which is not possible without a tower – in the end, higher dice values bring more points. The game lasts for two rounds, with an intermediate scoring taking place at the end of the first round: A starting point ticket is used to check which continuously connected hex tiles you have achieved with which dice values.

After this interim scoring, your personal tiles are refilled, and the second round begins. Animals with a small heart symbol are particularly tricky, as they can only be covered with low dice rolls (one or two) – but they act as a multiplier for the points of the respective connected area at the end. If you don't get a suitable heart tile into the area, the potential bonus is completely lost.

## From simple to brain-burning

At the start, Spectacular feels pleasantly simple: you just place everything that fits your starting point. But the further the game progresses, the more you have to weigh things up – do I take the die that activates this tile now, but still need another tile for it? Or would I rather wait until the right die comes along? Turns noticeably lengthen as the game progresses because players ponder more and more – at the same time, it's realistically never possible to fulfill all your own wishes in the zoo. But this is not a flaw, it's simply part of the game's appeal.

## Background: A pair of brothers from Norway

Spectacular comes from brothers Eilif Svensson and Åsmund Svensson, who also founded the publishing house Chilifox Games together. The Norwegian duo has made a name for itself in recent years with accessible yet surprisingly complex family games – and Spectacular seamlessly fits into this tradition with its unusual dice-tile puzzle system.

## My conclusion

Spectacular positively surprised me, especially because it seems simpler at first glance than it actually is in the end. The combination of limited selection – you always get what's left or is passed on – and the balancing act between dice and matching tiles provides surprisingly much head-scratching in an actually family-friendly game.

The best part: Spectacular works for one to six players and can be played just as easily with family gamers as with more experienced frequent players. It's not just "laying cards", but is full of small tactical decisions. A clear recommendation for anyone looking for an accessible yet challenging puzzle experience.
