Reviews

Snow Quest – also known internationally as Snowcrest – is a compact card game for one to four players that takes you to a snowy mountain village. We've recently had a few card games with a 3x3 grid on the Teddy table, for example Castle Combo, and here too you build such a grid together as your own village. The game immediately catches the eye graphically and in terms of materials: lovely animal illustrations in the Everdell style and even fabric game boards that are more reminiscent of a tea towel.

## Profile

- **Players:** 1–4
- **Age:** ages 12+
- **Duration:** approx. 45 minutes
- **Mechanism:** 3x3 card grid, engine-building
- **Theme:** Village building in the snow

## Hidden grid, three possible actions

Each player starts with an identical deck of cards, from which four starting cards are placed face down on their own 3x3 grid at the beginning – however, each player decides for themselves exactly where each card lands, which is why the start already looks slightly different for each player. When it's your turn, you have three options: You can activate one of your own cards and perform the action shown on it, after which you turn the card over to its back. You can buy a new card from the general display, pay for it with grain, and build it directly into your village – these purchased cards usually provide stronger actions than the starting cards. Or you can rest: As soon as three of your cards in a row, column, or diagonal have been activated and turned over, you may rest and collect the resources shown on the backs of the cards.

## Scrolls, buildings, and sleeping monsters

The game's objective revolves around collecting scrolls – there's a specific supply depending on the number of players, and once all scrolls are claimed, the game ends with a final scoring, where remaining resources also count. You can also build buildings in three colors matching the three main resources, which brings additional points, and you have the option to awaken sleeping monsters by spending resources – if you fail, you slide into the negative points area on a reputation track, but you usually still get a small reward like a scroll. A special resource is juniper, which comes from the forest: once a forest card stack with juniper symbols is depleted, you reveal a new forest card that, similar to the monsters, presents you with a condition.

## Background: From Snowcrest to Snow Quest

The original comes from designer Philip duBarry, with illustrations by Kerri Aitken, and was released internationally by Grail Games under the title Snowcrest. Asmodee took over distribution for the German-speaking market. Philip duBarry is known in the board game scene, among other things, for his debut game Revolution! and with Snow Quest he has once again shown that he has a knack for compact, thematically coherent engine-building mechanisms.

## My conclusion

Snow Quest is a nice little deckbuilder with charming material, even if the fabric tableaus unfortunately remain a bit bumpy after folding. Otherwise, the thick cardboard is convincing, and the game can be played down pleasantly loosely without being complicated. It's not an absolute top-flyer, but I quite enjoyed it – and the illustrations of the cute animal villagers are really worth seeing.

For anyone looking for a relaxed, beautifully designed engine-building card game with a cozy winter theme, Snow Quest is a solid choice.
