Reviews

Ezra & Nehemiah really surprised me. I already know and appreciate the publisher Garphill Games from titles like "The Architects" or "The Voyages of Marco Polo", and with Ezra & Nehemiah, a new series is starting, which visually stands out from the publisher's previous, clearly defined series with subtle, beige tones. I went in without great expectations and was positively overwhelmed.

## Profile

- **Mechanism:** Cards with seal system, workers
- **Theme:** Reconstruction of Jerusalem

## Collect seals, strengthen actions

In Ezra & Nehemiah, you rebuild the city of Jerusalem by playing cards from your hand onto one of three slots on your player board. Each card bears seals in one of three colors – blue, red, or gray. If you play a card with two blue and one red seal, you can immediately perform a blue action of strength 2 or a red action of strength 1. The truly clever part: If you play another card with blue seals onto the same slot in a later round, the seals add up – your actions become more powerful over the course of the game instead of starting from zero with each turn.

Additionally, each card has another action at the bottom, independent of the seals, which you can also use – thereby offering multiple tactical options for each individual card.

## Three ways to rebuild

You use the gray seals to remove rubble from the city wall and to build new gates or wall sections – every time an opponent builds a wall section directly next to yours, you even receive a small reward. With the red seals, you advance on a track and help build the temple and palace, while the blue seals fill a pyramid-shaped structure in which you climb higher and higher – the higher you go, the more valuable the permanent perks, but the more blue seals you also need for it.

In addition, there are worker fields on your player board where you can place your workers to gain one-time additional seals or resources. The building materials you obtain - from simple black stone to more valuable material - are needed to remove higher-value wall sections, while the simple black resources advance you on another track, also yielding rewards there.

## Six cards per round, three slots on the board

Each round, you play a total of six cards from your hand – but only three slots are available on your player board. This means that each new card automatically covers an older one, blocking its seal for further scoring. You constantly have to consider which slot to place a new card in so as not to destroy your built-up seal combinations prematurely. It is precisely this balancing process that makes Ezra & Nehemiah noticeably brain-burning despite its comparatively simple basic rules.

## Background: From the Architects to the Biblical Series

Ezra & Nehemiah comes again from Shem Phillips and S J Macdonald, the designer duo behind Garphill Games, who have already caused a sensation in the Euro-game scene with the West Kingdom trilogy ("Architects of the West Kingdom", among others) and the South Tigris series. With Ezra & Nehemiah, the duo is launching a new series centered around the biblical reconstruction of Jerusalem – thematically a clear break from the previous medieval settings, but mechanically noticeably held in the same thoughtful style.

## My conclusion

Ezra & Nehemiah really impressed me with its clever seal system. The basic mechanic – playing cards, collecting seals, making actions stronger – is astonishingly quick to understand, but unfolds surprising tactical depth through the interplay of the three tracks, the workers, and the limited slots. We played with four players, and the turns remained pleasantly swift despite the complexity.

With a complexity of roughly 3.6 to 3.7 on the BGG scale, it is definitely a game for connoisseurs that invites contemplation, but at the same time plays quickly. For everyone who liked Garphill Games' previous series or generally appreciates interconnected Euro games with card engines, Ezra & Nehemiah is a clear recommendation.

- Multiple parallel development paths (wall, temple/palace, pyramid)
- Turns remain pleasantly quick despite complexity
- From a proven designer duo with a strong track record

#### Contra

- Too complex for beginners and casual players
- Limited slots require precise advance planning
