Reviews

Everdell Duo is a standalone two-player variant of the popular Everdell, developed by James A. Wilson and Clarissa A. Wilson – the same married couple who created the original – and released by Starling Games in 2025. Visually and thematically, everything remains the same: forest creatures, pretty buildings, cute animals. Mechanically, however, a lot has changed to specifically optimize the game for two people, rather than simply adopting the basic rules unchanged for fewer players.

## Profile

- Players: 2
- Mechanisms: Worker Placement, Card Engine (Everdell Spin-off)
- Theme: Forest creatures

## Sun, Moon, and the Art of Clever Limitation

The most striking new element is the sun and moon markers. They move depending on your actions: picking up resources advances the sun marker, playing cards moves the moon marker. Both markers thus limit your available options – an elegant system that prevents one person from dominating the game with overpowered combo moves, which could happen less often in the original with four players, but more easily with two.

This is accompanied by a limited "meadow": You may only choose cards that are located near your current marker position. This noticeably reduces the selection compared to the main game and significantly speeds up decisions – a clever trick that considerably defuses the notoriously analysis-heavy turn-pondering of the original without diluting the strategic substance.

Something has also changed with the card-entry mechanic: Where in the original only very specific animals were allowed to move into very specific buildings, here it often works by colors – green, for example, stands for production buildings. This gives you more flexibility in deploying your animal cards and makes the game more accessible overall without losing thematic coherence.

## Compact package with campaign and co-op mode

Everdell Duo comes in a significantly smaller box than the base game, with less setup effort – ideal if you spontaneously want to start a game for two without sorting through ten minutes of components first. The gameplay itself remains familiar in its basic structure: you deploy workers, collect resources, play cards with immediate and ongoing effects, and try to create as many synergies as possible between your buildings and animals.

What's especially new is how much the marker limit affects your timing: If the moon marker is far behind, for example, you can only play new cards rarely. This forces forward-thinking planning over several turns, instead of simply grabbing the strongest card available in the current display.

Additionally, Everdell Duo includes a campaign mode and a cooperative game mode, which add significant long-term fun to the game – two modes that are not present in the base game and are specifically tailored for the two-player experience.

## Background: Further developed by the creators themselves

What's particularly noteworthy about Everdell Duo: It wasn't developed as a spin-off by an external studio, but directly by James A. Wilson and Clarissa A. Wilson, the married couple who created the original Everdell. It was released in 2025 by their own publishing house, Starling Games. This explains why Everdell Duo doesn't feel like a rushed licensed version, but like a well-thought-out reinterpretation of the system for exactly two people, curated by the original authors themselves.

Everdell itself has evolved into a veritable game family since its initial release, with several expansions and spin-offs. Everdell Duo thus joins a growing number of dedicated two-player adaptations, as many successful game brands now offer – a trend that shows how important the pair and two-round target group has become for publishers today.

## My conclusion

Everdell Duo is visually enchanting and mechanically cleverly adapted to the two-player format: fewer dead ends, more direct decisions, plus a clever limitation system via sun and moon that prevents overpowered turns without feeling artificially restrictive. The campaign and co-op modes put a nice crown on the whole thing.

The most exciting question, of course, remains: Is Everdell Duo worth it if you already have the big Everdell on your shelf? That depends heavily on your playstyle. If you regularly play with two players or appreciate a more compact, faster version, the answer is a clear yes. However, if you almost exclusively play Everdell with three or four players, Everdell Duo is more of an optional but very nice addition than a must-have.

It is ideal for couples or two players who like Everdell but have less space, time, or desire for the full setup of the base game. It is also excellent as a gift or a compact travel version of the original. Those who own the big Everdell and rarely play with two can safely skip it – but if the design and theme appeal to you, you get a worthy, standalone addition to the Everdell family here.

### Pros & Cons

#### Pro

- Specially optimized for two players
- Sun/Moon markers prevent overpowered moves
- Campaign and Coop mode as a bonus
- Compact format with less setup effort

#### Contra

- Rather optional for owners of the base game
- Artificial scarcity due to the marker system can take some getting used to
