Update in advance, because it fits too well to keep quiet: When I recorded this video, Bomb Busters was still a "hot candidate" for the Game of the Year 2025 – it has now been confirmed that it actually won! Designer Hisashi Hayashi is thus the first Asian author to win in the 46-year history of the award, the game was published by Pegasus Spiele and Cocktail Games. Bomb Busters is a cooperative deduction game in which you have to defuse bombs together, while each of you has secret wires on your own board that others cannot see.

## Profile

- Mechanism: Cooperative deduction game
- Theme: Defusing bombs

## Guess cables without seeing them

The basic challenge: Your fellow players don't know which cables you have on your board. They must figure out which cables you have through clever deduction and mutual hints in order to defuse all bombs together without making fatal mistakes. In front of you are cables with values from 1 to 12, sorted in ascending order, but your fellow players only see the backs. At the beginning, you take a marker and give a first hint by placing it somewhere between your cables and saying, for example: "There is a six here." From this, it can be deduced that all cables to the left of it must be lower and all to the right of it must be higher than six.

Additionally, there are red and yellow special wires that function differently from the normal number wires. The yellow wires have intermediate values like 8.5 or 11.1, which are openly marked at the beginning of the game so everyone knows which ones are in play. A fellow player must then point to the correct yellow wire exactly and name it correctly. If the guess is correct, the wire is revealed and nothing bad happens. If it's wrong, a time marker moves one space forward – after four or five failed attempts, depending on the difficulty level, the bomb explodes and you have lost.

## Deduction with growing certainty

The further the game progresses, the more information accumulates: Each number appears exactly four times in the entire pool of cables. For example, if all four eights have already been revealed, you know for sure that more eights are in play – this number can be completely excluded for all future guesses. With each revealed card, the probability of guessing correctly increases, because you can gradually exclude what can still remain.

Additional spice is brought into the game by individual character abilities and equipment cards that you unlock during the game. Some, for example, allow you to show two wires at the same time, which significantly increases the probability of hitting. These equipment cards are displayed openly, and whoever's turn it is can use them to facilitate their guess. Another option is the so-called solo cut: If you have two wires of the same number on your board yourself, you can reveal them independently without anyone else having to guess - a clever way to distribute information faster within the team and at the same time relieve your teammates.

In the end, you win together if only the red wire is left and someone finally defuses the bomb with it. If you accidentally hit the red wire or make too many mistakes, the bomb goes off, and the game is lost. There are also different scenarios and difficulty levels, which mainly differ in how many special yellow wires and similar complications are mixed into the game.

## Background: A historic victory for a Japanese author

Hisashi Hayashi is longer an unknown in professional circles, but with Bomb Busters, he achieves his greatest international success to date. The game is a revised version of his 2020 title Bomb Squad, and 66 different missions were developed for the final, award-winning version. The traditional Japanese card game Babanuki, better known in the West as "Black Peter" or Old Maid, served as thematic and mechanical inspiration.

The Spiel des Jahres 2025 award marks a historic moment: Never before in the 46-year history of the prize has a designer from Asia won. This underscores how international the board game scene has become, and should give Bomb Busters additional momentum, far beyond the already large fan base of cooperative deduction games.

## My conclusion

Bomb Busters combines teamwork, deduction, and excitement in a truly fresh way. For fans of cooperative games with real thrills, it's an absolute highlight – and with the now confirmed title "Spiel des Jahres 2025", it's officially ennobled. It's remarkable that a cooperative game has won the award for two years in a row, showing how much the taste of the jury and apparently many game groups has shifted towards teamwork experiences.

Personally, I found Hamburg and Pirates of Maracaibo Evo from this group of four somewhat more accessible to my own taste, but Bomb Busters convinces with its unique theme and dynamic, constantly thinking gameplay. It is exactly the kind of game where you think aloud together at the table, call out tips to each other, and in the end either collectively breathe a sigh of relief or survive the virtual explosion together – in a figurative sense, of course.

For anyone who likes cooperative deduction games with a noticeable time pressure, Bomb Busters is an unreserved recommendation, and given the award as Game of the Year 2025, you will probably encounter it in many game rounds soon anyway.
