However, you are only allowed to move to free spaces – a clever, albeit simple, mechanism that noticeably restricts your freedom of movement as soon as several players compete for the same attractive spaces. The real be-all and end-all of the game is rescuing and training the so-called "little men" – the citizens of Atlantis. There are three types in different colors, such as black, white, and brown, with brown little men often acting as workers. After the king's move, you may choose two out of a total of five available actions, including training the little men or assigning already trained little men to your houses. ## Houses, strips, and the race against the flood The better a male is trained, the more points it will bring you if you successfully house it in one of your houses. Some houses require very specific types of males, but in return give you permanent bonuses. Additionally, there is a progress bar on which you can advance to receive further rewards. If you have successfully trained certain males, you can also play influence cards that give you additional advantages. The game spans a total of five rounds, after which specific rows are scored. In each scoring, the player who has successfully brought the most little men of a color to their houses wins. Particularly unpleasant: For every little man you couldn't rescue by the end of the game and who is still helplessly on the sinking game board, you get significant penalty points. The real challenge lies in deciding in good time which males you want to save and train at all, in order to incur as few penalty points as possible in the end. It's definitely fun, but for me personally, it's not a must-have. I enjoy playing it when it comes to the table, but it doesn't make it into my own collection because the core theme – rescuing little men – doesn't offer quite as much tactical depth in the long run as I would wish for a 90-minute game. The clear round structure over five rounds with their respective interim evaluations certainly creates good suspense, but compared to similar rescue and collection games, Atlantis Exodus lacks that certain unique selling point for me, which sets it apart from the mass of good mid-range Euro-games. Those who like dramatic themes with solid, calm mechanics and are not afraid of negative points will get a well-rounded gaming experience without any major rough edges.
